Early Treatment
What is the 'right age' for orthodontics?
Any orthodontic problem can be treated at any age. A spectacular smile, improved dental health, improved facial esthetics and a boost to self esteem are some of the goals of people who seek orthodontic treatment. Age should not be a factor in seeking treatment and achieving these goals. These benefits are available to anyone—young or old. However, it is important to understand that age can play a significant role in the treatment plan specifics.
The American Association of Orthodontists recommends an orthodontic evaluation by the age of seven. Although treatment may not be needed at an early age, children who aren't ready for braces will benefit from an early evaluation and by having their growth and development monitored by a licensed orthodontic specialist.
If you or your general dentist observe any of the following early warning signs in your child's development an orthodontic examination may be needed:
- Overjet—upper teeth protrude past lower teeth
- Underbite—lower teeth protrude beyond upper teeth
- Crossbite—upper teeth fit inside the lower teeth
- Open bite—upper and lower teeth do not contact
- Overlapping or crowded teeth
- Mouth breathing
- Difficulty chewing
- Finger sucking after the age of 5
- Jaw joint problems
- Early or late loss of teeth
- Grinding or clenching of teeth
- Self esteem or social issues related to the appearance of the teeth
Improving your child's tooth and gum health is paramount. Crowded teeth are hard to clean and maintain and in time mal-alignment may contribute to tooth decay, gum disease, and eventual tooth loss. Bad bites can also result in abnormal wear of tooth surfaces, difficulty in chewing, and damage to supporting bone and gum tissue. Jaw joint (TMJ) dysfunction is sometimes exacerbated to crooked teeth and incorrect bites. When left untreated, most orthodontic problems only worsen. Treatment by a specialist to correct the original problem is often less costly than the additional dental care required to treat more serious problems that can develop in later years.
